What you should know about Background Music for your business

It’s a fact that background music is a benefit to any business environment. The right music can help sooth and relax patients in dental and medical offices and reduce their perceived wait time. And, studies have shown that background music in retail environments increases time customers spend shopping, increases how much they spend, and how much they are willing to pay for an item.

  • 90% of customers are more likely to recommend a store that plays music
  • 75% of shoppers say they feel more relaxed in retail stores that play music
  • 67% of social media users discuss music (and movies) ahead of any other topic
  • 60% of customers spend more time shopping in stores that play music that they like

But don’t turn on the CD player just yet. No matter it’s a hotel lobby, a restaurant, medical facility or retail store, business must have the proper licensing to play music in their public space. The United States Copyright Law is to protect the rights of artists, authors, composers and publishers to their work. When anyone plays or performs music in public, or distributes music in any form, they must have the rights to that music. If not, U.S. federal copyright laws call for severe legal and financial penalties.

Another consideration is controlling the kinds of music your customers are hearing. Led Zepplin wouldn’t be a good choice for a dental office! Questions like: What are you selling? What kind of customers/people will be hearing the music?   If you’re in retail, do you see trends throughout the day? An experienced music service will take the time to get to know your business and provide the right overhead music solution.

The goal is to create an environment that is positive, customer friendly, mood-enhancing and business-generating … legally and efficiently.
